Popular location
The picturesque town of Colona in Colorado sits between the mountains and the valley near the rather beautiful town of Telluride and the Telluride Ski Resort, a favourite winter escape of the rich and famous. Talk show legend Oprah owns a home in Telluride, while Hollywood actor Tom Cruise once had a ski chalet in the area worth a cool £28.4 million ($39.5m). This means that Colona is well-placed to capitalise on the area's tourism industry, should the new owner wish.
Stunning surroundings
Spanning over 38 acres, Colona and the surrounding area was settled in the late 19th century with a number of homesteads constructed. The residential community currently comprises seven homes, one mobile home, 11 residential lots, the historic post office and the Stockyards, which is an outdoor community events space.
Steeped in history
The idyllic community is surrounded by countryside and flanked by farms, ridges, mountains and the Uncompahgre River. The first settlers arrived in Colona in 1874, with the Ute Indian Tribe settling in the area around the town the following year. White colonisers forced the tribe to relocate in 1881, after which point the settlement changed ownership a number of times. In the late 1880s, a military post and a railroad stop were established.
A labour of love
21 buildings are included in the town's sale, and thankfully nearly all the commercial buildings have been meticulously restored over the years by the current owner. With much of the development work already completed, Colona is waiting for a new buyer to put their own stamp on the settlement.
A tight-knit community
Peppered with characterful period buildings, the outpost has no end of heritage charm. In 2020, the population of Colona was just 36, according to the United States Census Bureau, while the town's website now numbers its residents at 23. A tight-knit town with a strong sense of community, it's clear that whoever snaps up this unique settlement will be taking on more than just bricks and mortar.
Important restorations
Here we see the Colona Hall, a limestone and brick building built in the late 1800s. Once upon a time, it used to house the post office and other local businesses, while the second storey was used as residential apartments. After a spell as a warehouse for a packing company, the space has recently undergone a renovation.
Community space
Historic boarding house
Located on Hotchkiss Avenue, you’ll find the Johnson Boarding House, pictured here, which was built by Charlie and Etta Johnson. The residence was mostly frequented by teachers from the town's school until its closure. These days, the pretty white clapboard building serves as a private home.
Pretty as a picture
There's no shortage of attractive residential buildings in the town. This charming home features yellow clapboarding, a quintessential white-picket fence and a snow-covered porch. We can just imagine kicking back on the bench at the end of a long day and taking in the picturesque views across the town.
Coffee shop to go?
The town's coffee shop is also for sale separately at £306,000 ($385k), should you want to complete the lot. With few refreshment options on the highway between Ouray and Montrose, it could be a savvy investment if you're looking for a lucrative business to take on.
Lattes all round
Also located on Hotchkiss Avenue, the delightful coffee shop comes complete with all the equipment, fixtures, decorations and furnishings pictured, as well as a large back patio with stunning views of the mountains. There's also a drive-thru for quick coffee fixes on the go and a large parking lot for patrons.
The town tavern
Not far from the coffee shop you’ll find the town bar, decorated in the style of an early 20th-century National Park Lodge. Also up for sale as a separate lot, the rustic cabin-style structure is said to be a big hit with passersby. For an extra £954,000 ($1.2m), you could take the bar under your wing too, and serve Old Fashioneds to the whole town.
Be your own barfly
As with the coffee shop, all the bar equipment, fixtures, furnishings, and decorations are included in the sale price, as well as a parking lot and lawned areas outside. According to the listing, there are two large porch decks that can double the bar's seating capacity in the busy summer months, so the possibilities for profit are endless!
Nearby amenities
As for local activities and amenities, Colona is just 10 minutes south of Montrose, which has an array of shops, a hospital and a commercial airport that serves the entire region. Nearby Ridgway is a short 15-minute drive south, with hiking and mountain bike trails, a reservoir and restaurants. Fancy taking on the challenge? The town of Colona is listed with Telluride Real Estate Corp for £5.2 million ($6.5m).

Villanova Heights, New York, USA: £95 million ($120m)
Fancy owning your very own high-end community in the Bronx, New York City? Complete with 15 sprawling homes designed by Robert A. M. Stern architects, the picturesque 15-acre town of Villanova Heights is up for sale with a hefty price tag of £95 million ($120m). According to the real estate listing, each of the palatial properties within the town has been assigned a market value of over £5.6 million ($7m) by the New York City Real Estate Tax Department, while monthly rental prices in Villanova Heights range from £14,700 ($18.5k) – £17,900 ($22.5k).
Villanova Heights, New York, USA: £95 million ($120m)
The development was originally carved out of a 16-acre forest called Chapel Farms. According to The New York Times, architect Robert A. M. Stern joined the project in 2006, having been drawn to the development because of his interest in the historic architecture of Dwight James Baum, who designed many of the Tudor, Colonial and Mediterranean-style villas in the wider Riverdale area.
Villanova Heights, New York, USA: £95 million ($120m)
Each property in Villanova Heights has a wealth of entertainment options inside, including a library, games room and wine cellar, while each house in the compound also comes with an outdoor landscaped swimming pool. During construction in 2009, architect Stern was interviewed by The New York Times and asked to explain the difference between the houses of Villanova Heights and so-called ‘McMansion’ developments. He replied: "This is not a house for the Sopranos. These houses have fine detailing; they are based on creative interpretation of traditional designs."
Villanova Heights, New York, USA: £95 million ($120m)
Influenced by Ochre Point in Newport, Rhode Island, a historic home dating back to the 19th century, this particular mansion at 5041 Goodridge Avenue sits on one of the highest lots at Villanova Heights. Measuring 9,000 square feet over four levels, each palatial floor of the property is serviced by the elevator. With so many luxury residences on offer, we wonder what the future holds for Villanova Heights, and if a buyer can be found to foot that hefty price tag...

Nestled in the arid desert of Yavapai County, the town of Cleator was founded in the late 1800s as a gold-mining outpost. Spanning almost 40 acres, this compact settlement was sold in February 2022 for $956,000 (£731k), after receiving a substantial price cut. The town boasts its own Cleator Bar and Yacht Club, decked out in a mix of cowboy memorabilia and nautical touches, including jet skis and buoys.
